- American country singer and songwriter Ellen Muriel Deason, known as Kitty Wells and the “Queen of Country Music”, was born in Nashville, Tennessee. Her 1952 hit “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” made her the first female country singer to reach No. 1 on the US country chart and the first female country star. Wells died on July 16, 2012, at the age of 92.
- American singer, songwriter and conductor Johnny Mann was born.
- American singer, songwriter and guitarist “Papa” John Phillips was born on Parris Island, South Carolina. He was best known as the leading figure of the folk-rock group The Mamas & The Papas. The group had the 1965 hit “California Dreamin'”, the US No. 1 single “Monday Monday” in 1966 and the 1967 hit “Dedicated to the One I Love”. Phillips died of heart failure on March 18, 2001, at the age of 65.
- John Peel, British radio DJ, journalist and television presenter, was born John Robert Parker Ravenscroft. He was the longest-serving presenter on BBC Radio 1 and one of the most influential British DJs. He was among the first presenters to play psychedelic and progressive rock on British radio and was known for supporting artists from many genres including pop, reggae, indie rock, alternative rock, punk, hardcore punk, breakcore, grindcore, death metal, British hip hop and dance music. Peel died of a heart attack in Cusco, Peru, on October 25, 2004, at the age of 65.
- English guitarist and singer John McNally was born in Walton, Liverpool. He was a founding member of The Searchers, with whom he remained for more than 60 years. The group had the UK No. 1 single “Needles And Pins” in 1964 and the US No. 3 single “Love Potion Number Nine”.
- Charles Colbert of American Breed was born. In 1967, the group had the US No. 5 single “Bend Me, Shape Me”, which became a hit for Amen Corner in the UK chart. American Breed also recorded radio advertising jingles for Coca-Cola, the United States Navy and Bell Telephone, and their television commercial for American Airlines, “Fly the American Way”, was highly successful and reached the Top 20.
- John Victory, a studio guitarist, was born.
- Hank Williams came to Herzog Studio in Cincinnati to record “I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry”. He originally wrote it with the intention that the words would be recited rather than sung. The song about loneliness was largely inspired by his troubled relationship with his wife Audrey Sheppard.

- English guitarist and songwriter Michael “Micky” Moody was born in Middlesbrough. He was best known as a member of Whitesnake, Juicy Lucy and Snafu. Juicy Lucy had the UK No. 14 single “Who Do You Love” in 1970, while Whitesnake had the US No. 1 single “Here I Go Again” in 1987 and reached No. 9 in the UK.
- Dana Rosemary Scallon, born Rosemary Brown, was born in London, England. In 1970, she won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland with “All Kinds of Everything”, which reached No. 1 on the UK singles chart.
- Kenny Andrews of the British doo-wop revival group Darts was born. In 1978, the group had the UK No. 2 single “Boy From New York City”.
- Bassist Horace Panter, also known as Sir Horace Gentleman, was born in Croydon, England. He became known as a member of 2 Tone and ska band The Specials. In 1981, the group had the UK No. 1 single “Ghost Town”.
- Ronald Beitle, drummer with the American funk rock group Wild Cherry, was born. In 1976, the group had the US No. 1 single “Play That Funky Music”, which reached No. 7 in the UK.
- Steve Jones, guitarist with the Sex Pistols, was born.
- Paul Anka began a nine-week run at No. 1 on the UK singles chart with “Diana”.
- English drummer and keyboard player Martin Jackson was born. He became known as a member of Magazine and Swing Out Sister. Magazine had the UK No. 41 single “Shot By Both Sides” in 1978, while Swing Out Sister had the UK No. 4 single “Breakout” in 1986.
- Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife” debuted at No. 59 on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 30. It came from the 1928 German play “Three Penny Opera”, later became Darin’s biggest hit, reached No. 1 and won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
- Twenty-four-year-old Gene Chandler recorded the song “Duke Of Earl” at Universal Recording studio in Chicago with his vocal group The Dukays. The recording session was originally intended for Nat Records, but the original tapes were later sold to Vee Jay Records, which scored its first No. 1 hit and first million-selling record with the song the following February. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2002, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included it among the 500 songs that shaped rock and roll. Gene Chandler later placed another 25 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, but none was as successful as “Duke Of Earl”.
- Keith McKenzie of the Scottish electronic dance group The Shamen was born. In 1992, the group had the UK No. 1 single “Ebeneezer Goode”.
- The Beatles performed at lunchtime at the Cavern Club in Liverpool and in the evening at the Riverpark Ballroom in Chester with Gerry & the Pacemakers.
- British trance DJ, producer and remixer Paul Mark Oakenfold was born in London. He toured with U2 and remixed songs for Simply Red, M People, New Order, Stone Roses and U2.
- Robert Clivilles, producer and DJ from the American group C+C Music Factory, was born. In 1991, the group had the UK No. 4 single “Things That Make You Go Hmmm...” and the US No. 1 single “Gonna Make You Sweat”.
- Bob Dylan released the album “Highway 61 Revisited”, which marked his definitive transition to an electric sound. The album included, among others, “Like a Rolling Stone”, which reached No. 2, and the more than eleven-minute song “Desolation Row”.
- Peter Cunnah of the Northern Irish pop and dance group D:Ream was born in Derry, Northern Ireland. In 1994, the group had the UK No. 1 single “Things Can Only Get Better”.
- The Mamas and the Papas’ second album was their self-titled album, released by Dunhill Records. It contained the singles “I Saw Her Again”, which reached No. 5 in the US and No. 11 in the UK, and “Words of Love”, which reached No. 5 in the US and No. 47 in the UK. The album reached No. 4 in the US and No. 24 in the UK.
- The Who began two days of recording at IBC Studios and Pye No. 2 Studio in London. During these sessions, the group recorded “Barbara Ann” by The Regents, “Man with Money” by The Everly Brothers, “Heatwave” by Martha and the Vandellas and the theme tune from the then-popular television series Batman. The recordings were intended for a new album with the working title “Jigsaw Puzzle”. The producer was Kit Lambert and the sound engineer was Paul Clay.

- The Byrds released their sixth studio album “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” through Columbia Records. The album marked a significant departure from their previous psychedelic folk-rock sound toward country and bluegrass and reached No. 77 on the Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart. Gram Parsons also contributed to the album. The album is considered one of the first major country-rock albums and became an important milestone for the emerging Los Angeles country-rock scene of the 1970s.

- Two weeks after the Woodstock festival, the second Isle of Wight Festival was held. More than 150,000 people attended over two days, coming to see Bob Dylan, The Band, Blodwyn Pig, Blonde On Blonde, Bonzo Dog Dooh Dah Band, Edgar Broughton Band, Joe Cocker, Aynsley Dunbar, Family, Fat Mattress, Julie Felix, Free, Gypsy, Richie Havens, The Moody Blues, The Nice, Tom Paxton, Pentangle, The Pretty Things, Third Ear Band and The Who, among others. Tickets cost 25 shillings. Celebrities attending the festival included Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, John and Yoko, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Jane Fonda, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton.
- Birmingham group Earth changed their name to Black Sabbath after Ozzy Osbourne announced the new name on stage. At their first concert under the name Black Sabbath in Workington, England, the band played “N.I.B.”, “The Wizard”, “Black Sabbath” and “Warning”.
- The three-day Texas International Pop Festival began at Dallas International Motor Speedway, featuring Chicago Transit Authority, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Sam & Dave, Johnny Winter, Grand Funk Railroad, Delaney & Bonnie, Nazz, Spirit, B. B. King and Canned Heat. More than 120,000 fans attended the festival.

- The Beach Boys released their 17th studio album “Surf’s Up” through Brother/Reprise Records. The album reached No. 29 in the US and No. 15 in the UK and became their highest-charting album of new material in the US since 1967. Daryl Dragon can be heard on the album playing Moog synthesizer, organ, piano, electric guitar, bass guitar and vibraphone.
- David Bowie performed at the Rainbow Theatre in London.
- John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged the One to One benefit concert at Madison Square Garden in New York to support Willowbrook State School. Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack and Sha Na Na also performed at the event. Lennon performed with the Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band and played “Imagine”, “Instant Karma!” and “Cold Turkey”. He personally purchased $60,000 worth of tickets, which were distributed to volunteers organizing the fundraiser. Some of the performances were later released on Lennon’s album “Live in New York City”.
- The Allman Brothers Band performed at the Municipal Auditorium in Atlanta, Georgia.
- Van Morrison released the album “Saint Dominic's Preview” as part of its international release period.
- Elvis Presley performed an evening and midnight concert at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas. The evening performance began at 8:30 p.m. and was attended by 2,200 people.
- The surviving members of The Doors officially announced the breakup of the group, two years after Jim Morrison’s death. Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger later attempted several reunions, including the projects “Other Voices” and “Full Circle” and a major tour in 2002 under the name The Doors of the 21st Century with singer Ian Astbury of The Cult.

- Singer, songwriter, rapper and co-founder of the pop and hip-hop group LFO Richard “Rich” Cronin was born in Boston, Massachusetts.
- Casey Johnson, bassist with American Hi-Fi, was born.
- Elton John’s ninth studio album “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” returned to No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 after a six-week break. That same year, it also topped the charts in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
- Eric Clapton performed at the Scope arena in Norfolk, Virginia.
- KC and the Sunshine Band reached No. 1 on the US singles chart with “Get Down Tonight”. It was the first of five of their singles to reach No. 1, and the song reached No. 21 in the UK. It later received a platinum certification for sales of one million copies in the US and reached No. 1 in Canada.
- Paul Kossoff, guitarist with Free and Back Street Crawler, was taken to hospital after a sudden deterioration in his health, where he was considered dead for 35 minutes. Kossoff died on March 19, 1976, from heart failure following long-term problems with drug use.
- Rod Stewart reached No. 1 on the UK albums chart with “Atlantic Crossing”, which began a five-week run at the top.
- Aerosmith performed at the International Center Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii.
- During the carnival in the London district of Notting Hill, clashes broke out between Black youths and the police. Members of The Clash were present, and the event inspired them to write “White Riot” as a call for white people to protest with the same intensity.

- American singer and songwriter Bleta Rexha was born. She first established herself as a songwriter, including as a co-writer of Eminem’s single “The Monster”, which later won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance, as well as songs for Shinee, Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas. Her 2017 single “Meant to Be” with Florida Georgia Line was highly successful as a country crossover, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending a record 50 weeks at the top of the US country chart.
- Billy Joel fired his manager and former brother-in-law Frank Weber after an audit uncovered serious financial irregularities, substantial depletion of his accounts and a $5 million debt to the US Internal Revenue Service. The following September, he sued Weber for $90 million, accusing him of fraud, breach of fiduciary duty and extortion under federal law. A few days after the lawsuit was filed, Weber declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy to protect his remaining assets. The legal dispute eventually ended in an out-of-court settlement, and Joel recovered only part of the lost funds, approximately $8 million. Frank Weber was never criminally prosecuted or imprisoned.
- Izzy Stradlin of Guns N' Roses was arrested for disorderly conduct during a flight in the United States. He urinated on the floor, verbally abused a flight attendant and smoked in the non-smoking section of the plane.

- Dottie West suffered serious injuries in a car accident while travelling to a performance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. She died five days later.
- Jan Berry of Jan & Dean married Gertie Filip in Las Vegas, Nevada. The wedding took place on stage during a Jan & Dean performance.
- Billy Joel’s version of Elvis’s song “All Shook Up” reached No. 92 on the US singles chart. The song came from the soundtrack to the film “Honeymoon in Vegas”.
- Elvis Presley’s “Don't Be Cruel” reached No. 42 on the UK singles chart.
- At that year’s Reading Festival in England, Suede, Ride, Pavement, Public Enemy and Manic Street Preachers performed. Nirvana headlined the festival and played their final UK concert, which became one of their most famous performances. Kurt Cobain came on stage in a wheelchair pushed by music journalist Everett True, parodying speculation about his mental state. Manic Street Preachers bassist Nicky Wire smashed a guitar into two pieces and threw it into the audience, hitting a security worker who required 16 stitches. L7 also appeared on the bill, and their singer Donita Sparks threw a used tampon into the audience.
- U2 became only the second act to perform at Yankee Stadium in New York during their sold-out Zoo TV Tour. The first was Billy Joel.
- Comedic songwriter Allan Sherman died at the age of 68.
- At the premiere of The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS, Billy Joel became the first musical guest. The show was broadcast from the newly renovated Ed Sullivan Theater in New York. Joel performed with Paul Shaffer and the newly named CBS Orchestra, playing “No Man's Land”.

- Oasis played an unplanned acoustic performance at the Virgin Megastore on Marble Arch in London, where they performed a selection of new songs. Evan Dando of The Lemonheads joined them on stage, and together they performed the new song “Whatever” live for the first time; it was not released as a standalone single until December of that year.
- Oasis released their first studio album “Definitely Maybe”, which later spent 177 weeks on the UK chart. It also became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK, and more than eight million copies were sold worldwide.

- James Taylor and his former wife Carly Simon performed together for the first time since 1979 before 10,000 fans at the benefit concert “Livestock '95” on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The couple separated in 1981 and their divorce was finalized in 1983. They first performed separate solo sets and then performed together to raise money for a local agricultural society.
- During the filming of the video for Meat Loaf’s song “I'd Lie for You”, a pilot and cameraman were killed in a helicopter crash in Sequoia National Forest approximately 150 miles north of Los Angeles, California.
- Sterling Morrison, founding member and guitarist of The Velvet Underground, died in Poughkeepsie, New York, from non-Hodgkin lymphoma, one day after his 53rd birthday. He left the group in August 1971 and rejoined it in 1992 for a European tour. In the 1980s, he became a tugboat captain in Houston. The Velvet Underground were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
- Liam Gallagher flew to America to rejoin his Oasis bandmates on the tour for the album “(What's the Story) Morning Glory?”. The band played their first four concerts with his brother Noel as the singer after the singer watched their MTV Unplugged performance from backstage and claimed to be suffering from a throat infection.
- Oasis’s third studio album “Be Here Now” began a four-week run at No. 1 on the UK albums chart.
- After 11 weeks at the top, “I'll Be Missing You”, dedicated to The Notorious B.I.G. and recorded by his producer and record label boss Puff Daddy, lost the No. 1 position on the US chart. “Mo Money Mo Problems” by The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Puff Daddy and Mase reached the top and began a two-week run at No. 1. The song was released posthumously following the murder of The Notorious B.I.G. earlier that year.

- At the age of 17, Rihanna released her debut album “Music Of The Sun”. Its first single was the successful song “Pon De Replay”, which drew on her Bajan heritage and used Caribbean rhythms.
- Rapper Lil Wayne was sued by a woman for $1 million, who claimed she had been crushed during one of his concerts after a large amount of cash was thrown into the audience. Tyrique Layne, who was 17 at the time, said that she lost consciousness during the concert in Maryland in October 2006 after being trampled by the crowd and subsequently suffered memory loss and severe headaches.
- Jonas Brothers began a two-week run at No. 1 on the US chart with their third studio album “A Little Bit Longer”.
- Worldwide media reported that a toilet once owned by John Lennon sold at auction for £9,500 ($14,740), approximately ten times its original estimated value. After a new toilet was installed, Lennon told builder John Hancock, who took away the original blue-and-white toilet: “Put some flowers in it or something.” The toilet had been stored for more than 40 years and was put up for sale after Hancock died.
- Adele reached No. 1 on the UK singles chart with “Someone Like You”.
- His estate announced a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Arista Music, formerly RCA Records, claiming that Elvis Presley had been unfairly exploited by his record company during his lifetime. It sought proper payment of revenues from new media such as ringtones, downloads and entertainment applications. On June 1, 2017, a court ruled in favor of Arista, stating that Presley had sold the rights to his songs to RCA Records in 1973 for $5.4 million and had been properly and fully compensated.
- A 96-year-old man who wrote a song for his late wife reached the US iTunes Top 10 alongside Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Fred Stobaugh had no previous musical experience and wrote the song spontaneously for a contest. He mailed in his handwritten lyrics, and although the contest was held entirely online, the organizers were so moved by his story that they set the lyrics to music. The song “Oh Sweet Lorraine” reached No. 7 on the US iTunes chart and received more than 1.9 million views on YouTube.
- A signed copy of John Lennon’s 1964 humorous book “In His Own Write” sold for more than $5,600 on eBay after 47 bids. The book contained short stories, poems and drawings.
- Cinemas across the UK handed out earplugs to parents accompanying their children to the film One Direction: This Is Us 3D. The accompanying adults could therefore enjoy the film without worrying about the expected loud screaming and cheering in the theaters.
- After returning to the stage, Kate Bush became the first woman to have eight albums in the UK chart simultaneously. Two of her albums were in the Top 10 and eight albums in total were in the Top 40. This happened after she returned to performing and played her first live concerts in 35 years. Before her, only Elvis Presley, who had twelve albums in the Top 40 after his death in 1977, and The Beatles, who had eleven in 2009, had placed more albums in the Top 40.
- Taylor Swift and Kanye West reconciled when Swift presented him with the Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards, where West had famously interrupted her acceptance speech six years earlier.
- Wilko Johnson, known for his work with Dr. Feelgood, returned to the stage after overcoming cancer, performing at the Rye Jazz Festival in East Sussex, England.
- American singer Chris Brown was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a woman reported to police that he had threatened her with a gun. Beauty queen Baylee Curran told the Los Angeles Times that Brown had pointed a gun at her after she admired her friend’s jewelry. Brown emerged from his home following a police standoff.
- A copy of the first pressing of The Beatles’ “The White Album”, owned by Ringo Starr and bearing the catalog number 0000001, was officially confirmed as the most expensive LP ever sold at auction. In December 2015, it was sold for $790,000 at Julien's Auction House.
- The Go-Go's completed their final tour and played their last concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
- Canadian drummer, guitarist and keyboard player Ronald Harry “Skip” Prokop, founding member of the rock groups The Paupers and Lighthouse, died at the age of 73. - Danielle Moore, singer of the British electronic group Crazy P, died at the age of 52. The group released six albums and several singles, beginning with “Digging Deeper” in 1996, and built a strong following in Australia, where they performed several times.
- Sabrina Carpenter became the first female artist and the third artist overall to simultaneously occupy No. 1 on the UK albums and singles charts with the single “Taste” and the album “Short ’n Sweet”. When “Taste” debuted at No. 2 on the US Hot 100, Carpenter became the first artist since The Beatles to place her first three hits in the Top 5 in a single week.
