- Don Helms, the steel guitarist best known as a member of Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys, died at the age of 81. He played on more than 100 Hank Williams recordings and also appeared on classic country recordings by Patsy Cline, Stonewall Jackson, the Louvin Brothers, Lefty Frizzell and Loretta Lynn.
