- George Michael was at No. 1 on the UK singles chart with his first solo single, “Careless Whisper.” He thus became the first person to reach No. 1 in the same year as both a solo artist and a member of a group. The song became Epic Records' first UK million-seller and reached No. 1 in nearly 25 countries.
- George Michael reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Monkey”. It was his fourth consecutive single from the album “Faith” to reach the top of the US chart, and his fourth US No. 1 in 1988. It was his eighth US No. 1 single of the 1980s, surpassed only by Michael Jackson.
- George Michael released the single “Praying for Time”, the first single from the album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1.
- George Michael pleaded guilty at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court in London to driving under the influence of drugs. In July he had been arrested after crashing his car into the Snappy Snaps store in Hampstead while returning from London's Gay Pride.
