Allan Sherman began an eight-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart with his third studio album, "My Son, the Nut".

Keyboardist and pianist Larry Waddell of Mint Condition was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He wrote the group's gold-certified 1996 single "What Kind of Man Would I Be".

The Angels became the first white female group to reach No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart. "My Boyfriend's Back" began a three-week run at the top. Its writers Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein and Richard Gottehrer later wrote hits including "Sorrow", and as The Strangeloves had the U.S. No. 11 single "I Want Candy" in 1965. In the United Kingdom, the song reached No. 50 and also reached No. 1 in New Zealand that year.

The Ronettes released their first single, "Be My Baby", produced by Phil Spector. The song was their only U.S. Top 10 hit. Lead singer Veronica Bennett, later known as Ronnie Spector, sued Phil Spector in the late 1990s over unpaid royalties.

The film Viva Las Vegas starring Elvis Presley was released.

The single “Love Me Do” from The Beatles’ first recording session for EMI was released.

Hip-hop DJ and pioneer of the New York hip-hop scene DJ Red Alert was born.

Elvis Presley released the single “(You’re the) Devil in Disguise”, which around this date reached the top positions of the charts.

Frank Sinatra sold two-thirds of his record company Reprise to Warner Brothers, which subsequently took over its operation.

American multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jonathan Segel was born in Marseille, France. He became known for his work with Camper Van Beethoven and Sparklehorse.

The record company Reprise Records, owned by Frank Sinatra, became part of Warner Brothers Records.

The Beach Boys released the single “Surfer Girl”, which later reached No. 7 in the US. It was the first song written by Brian Wilson and the first recording he produced himself. The B-side, “Little Deuce Coupe”, reached No. 15 in the US.

The Beatles gave their final performance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. Since their debut at the club about two and a half years earlier, they had played 274 concerts there; their first appearance earned them £5 and their final one £300.

After an intensive search, the bodies of country singer Jim Reeves and his manager and musical collaborator Dean Manuel were found on August 2, 1964, in the wreckage of their plane, which had crashed 42 hours earlier. At 1:00 p.m. local time, radio stations across the United States officially announced Reeves’s death. Reeves was known for hits including “Four Walls,” “I Won't Forget You,” and “Mexican Joe.”

The BBC broadcast the documentary “Follow the Beatles,” which featured the group during the filming of “A Hard Day's Night.”

The Kinks released their third single, “You Really Got Me,” in the UK on Pye Records. The song became their breakthrough hit, later reaching No. 1 on the UK chart and No. 7 in the U.S.

Adam Yauch, also known as MCA, rapper, bassist and founding member of the Beastie Boys, was born in New York City.

The Beach Boys recorded “When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)” at United Western Studios in Hollywood. The song later reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 7 on the Cashbox chart and No. 1 on the Canadian singles chart.

Rod Stewart made his first television appearance as a member of The Hoochie Coochie Men on the BBC program “The Beat Room.”

The Dave Clark Five moved from No. 60 to No. 22 on the U.S. chart with “Because”.

The Young World Singers released “Ringo For President” on Decca Records. The song was created ahead of the U.S. presidential election and reached No. 132 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Rolling Stones performed at the New Elizabeth Ballroom at Belle Vue in Manchester. Two police officers fainted and another was taken to hospital with broken ribs while trying to control more than 3,000 screaming teenagers.

Bob Dylan and Joan Baez performed together on stage for the first time, singing “With God On Our Side” at the Newport Folk Festival.

Rapper, singer and songwriter Neneh Cherry was born in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Beatles reissued four singles in the United States: “Do You Want To Know A Secret”, “Please, Please Me”, “Love Me Do” and “Twist And Shout”.

Mick Jagger was stopped in Liverpool and fined £32 for speeding and driving without insurance. He was on his way to visit two fans who had been injured in a traffic accident.

Hamish Seelochan of The Pasadenas was born. The group had the UK No. 4 hit “I'm Doing Fine Now” in 1992.

The Beatles began recording their fourth studio album at EMI Studios in London, then still untitled and later released as Beatles For Sale. The album marked a departure from the carefree tone of their earlier recordings, partly because of the band's exhaustion after a series of concert tours. Recording was completed on October 26 and the album was released on December 4, 1964. It later reached No. 1 in Australia, Finland, Germany and the UK.

The Beatles recorded the song “Baby's In Black” on this day.

The Beatles' first film, A Hard Day's Night, premiered in New York.

The High Numbers, later known as The Who, performed at the Railway Hotel in Harrow, England. Just before the show, a fight took place outside the hotel in which singer Roger Daltrey was attacked by a relative. Daltrey returned to the stage after the incident and the band began playing.

A Hard Day's Night was released in U.S. theaters and became a major film success for The Beatles.

“Do Wah Diddy Diddy” reached No. 1 on the UK singles chart. The recording became an international hit and also reached No. 1 in the US, Sweden, and Canada.

The Supremes recorded “Baby Love”, written and produced by the Holland–Dozier–Holland team. The song later became their second US No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and their first UK No. 1.

The rockabilly singer and lead vocalist of The Rock and Roll Trio died in a boating accident while fishing on Clear Lake, California, at the age of 30. His unlit boat was struck by an inattentive motorboat, throwing him overboard and causing him to drown. His body was found on August 16, but the coroner determined that he had drowned on August 14. In 1961, his US single “Your Sixteen” reached number 8 and its UK release reached number 3.

The American guitarist and singer was born. Since 1995, he has been the lead guitarist of the rock-pop group Chicago.

They released the UK EP 5 x 5, recorded at Chess Studios on Chicago's South Side, the home studio of their blues heroes. Keith Richards said that when they arrived at the building, they found Muddy Waters painting the ceiling. Several months later, the EP was expanded to album length and released in America as 12 x 5.

Dean Martin's “Everybody Loves Somebody” knocked The Beatles' “A Hard Day's Night” from the No. 1 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100. It became his biggest hit and reached No. 11 in the UK. The song dated back to 1949 and had been unsuccessfully recorded by several other artists before Martin.

Following the success of The Beatles film A Hard Day's Night, The Dave Clark Five signed a film deal with Warner Bros. for the project Catch Us If You Can, which was released in the US under the title Having A Wild Weekend and premiered in the UK in July 1965.
