Van Halen dismissed David Lee Roth for the second time after they had recorded several new songs together for the planned greatest-hits compilation Best Of Volume 1. The band stated that the intention from the beginning had been to record two new songs with Roth for the compilation; however, after his appearance with the band at the
MTV Video Music Awards in September
1996, it became clear that a long-term reunion of the original lineup would not happen. Roth announced on October 2 that the reunion would not continue, and Van Halen's statement was released on October 3, 1996.
