    Sonny Bono announced his candidacy for mayor of Palm Springs, California. He said he was frustrated by bureaucracy surrounding the renovation of his Italian restaurant. He won the 1988 election and served as mayor until 1992. In 1996, he subsequently won a seat in Congress.
