It was the first performance by the Beatles lineup of John, Paul, George and Ringo, two days after their previous drummer Pete Best was dismissed.

    Ben E. King's song “I Who Have Nothing” reached No. 29 and became his fifth solo Top 40 hit on Billboard since leaving The Drifters in May 1960. Successful versions were later recorded by Terry Knight and the Pack, Liquid Smoke, Sylvester and Tom Jones, among others.

    The duo The Louvin Brothers, consisting of brothers Ira Lonnie and Charlie Elzer Loudermilk, performed together for the last time. Both then began solo careers.

    Wayne Newton's version of “Danke Schoen” reached No. 13 on the Hot 100 and No. 3 on the Easy Listening chart. The song was originally intended for Bobby Darin, but after Darin saw Newton perform at the Copacabana, he gave him the song to record.

    The Beatles flew from London to San Francisco with brief stops in Winnipeg and Los Angeles to begin their first full US concert tour. The first concert was scheduled for the following day at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, and they were accompanied by The Righteous Brothers, The Exciters, Jackie DeShannon and Bill Black's Combo. More than 9,000 fans were waiting for them when they arrived in San Francisco, and the protective barriers gave way under the pressure of the crowd. The group escaped only seconds before the barriers collapsed.

    The Doors officially signed a seven-album contract with Elektra Records. The band also reluctantly agreed to release “Break On Through” as their first single. The lyric “She gets high” was changed to “She gets” for radio airplay.

    The Who were scheduled to headline the Big Moose Showcase concert in Lorain, Ohio, but Dick Clark canceled their appearance because he did not want The Who playing near Cleveland shortly before a Herman's Hermits concert.

    British singer Tracy Tracy of The Primitives was born. The group became known, among other songs, for “Crash.”

    Elvis Presley performed at the International Hotel in Las Vegas in an evening Dinner Show at 8:15 p.m., followed by a Midnight Show. Both performances were attended by approximately 2,200 people. For the Dinner Show he wore a black herringbone suit with red pleats, and for the Midnight Show a black herringbone suit with blue pleats.

    Rapper, singer, songwriter and guitarist Erik Francis Schrody, known as Everlast, was born on Long Island, New York. He became known as the frontman of the hip-hop group House of Pain.

    Jimi Hendrix closed the Woodstock festival with a morning performance featuring “Hey Joe.” As the festival's headline act, he had originally been scheduled to perform the previous evening, but because the program ran longer than expected, he did not take the stage until Monday morning. His performance included a striking version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

    King Crimson performed at the Cooks Ferry Inn in London.

    Led Zeppelin performed two concerts at the Rock Pile in Toronto during their North American tour.

    Mick Jagger suffered a deep cut to his hand when a prop gun malfunctioned during the filming of the movie Ned Kelly in Australia.

    Local up-and-coming band Rush watched Led Zeppelin perform in Toronto. In 1974, when Rush began receiving US airplay with “Working Man,” radio stations received many calls asking whether it was a new Led Zeppelin song.
  60. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band; Sha Na Na; Jimi Hendrix
    The Woodstock festival ended with morning performances by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Sha Na Na and Jimi Hendrix, who played his version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at 9 a.m. Of the more than 400,000 attendees, only an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people remained in the mud for Hendrix's closing performance.

    Elvis Presley performed in the showroom of the Las Vegas Hilton on the opening night of a new engagement. During the performance, after “Polk Salad Annie,” he sat down at Ronnie Tutt's drums, and a female fan who had climbed onto the stage gave him “mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.”

    Four Seasons released the single “Who Loves You,” which became their first Top 10 hit in eight years.

    Variety reported that Marvin Gaye faced two consecutive five-day jail sentences in Los Angeles County for contempt of court over failure to pay child and spousal support.
  87. Elvis Presley
    Two girls from Missouri were killed and a third was critically injured when an eighteen-year-old Memphis driver drove into a crowd of more than 2,000 mourners outside the Graceland music gates at around 4 a.m. The driver was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident and two counts of second-degree murder. He ultimately served about two and a half years of a ten-year sentence.

    Elvis Presley's funeral service was held at Graceland from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Approximately 150 invited mourners were inside, while about 75,000 fans gathered outside. Elvis was then buried in a white marble crypt at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis near his mother Gladys's grave. In November, he was reburied at Graceland at his father's request.

    Melvin Franklin of The Temptations was shot four times in the hand and leg in Los Angeles while attempting to prevent a man from stealing his car. Although he survived the attack, his injuries prevented him from taking part in The Temptations' upcoming tour of Poland.

    The Who released the album Who Are You, the band's last studio album with drummer Keith Moon.
  95. AC/DC; Nils Lofgren; The Stranglers; The Who
    AC/DC, Nils Lofgren, The Stranglers and The Who performed at Wembley Stadium in London.

    Bob Dylan released his 19th studio album, Slow Train Coming.

    Chic's song “Good Times” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Soul Singles and Cashbox Best Sellers charts. It remained at the top of the US pop chart for one week. It was the first single from their third album, Risqué, and became one of the most frequently sampled recordings in popular music history, particularly in hip-hop.

    Nick Lowe married country singer Carlene Carter, stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, in Los Angeles. The wedding was later recreated in the video for Lowe's song “Cruel to Be Kind.” The couple divorced in 1990.

    The Police, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and R.E.M. performed at Shea Stadium in New York. It was R.E.M.'s biggest concert to date.

    George Michael was at No. 1 on the UK singles chart with his first solo single, “Careless Whisper.” He thus became the first person to reach No. 1 in the same year as both a solo artist and a member of a group. The song became Epic Records' first UK million-seller and reached No. 1 in nearly 25 countries.

    Red Hot Chili Peppers released their self-titled debut album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, after years of performing in clubs.

    Bon Jovi released their third studio album, Slippery When Wet, which reached No. 1 on the US chart. The album contained two US No. 1 singles, “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin' on a Prayer,” and later went twelve-times platinum.

    Aerosmith released the album Permanent Vacation, their first album after overcoming addiction. Hits such as “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” and “Angel” launched a remarkable comeback for the band, which had spent the previous decade struggling with drug addiction and a creative crisis.

    Jimmy Page joined Aerosmith on stage during the Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington in the UK, and together they performed two songs.

    Billy Preston was arrested in Los Angeles on charges of assaulting a sixteen-year-old boy. Later, in a separate case involving possession of cocaine and a dangerous weapon, he pleaded no contest and received five years' probation and 90 days of house arrest.

    Rick Griffin died after being forced off the road on his motorcycle, a Harley Heritage Softail, while attempting to overtake a van. Among his best-known works were the cover of the Grateful Dead album Aoxomoxoa and the legendary “Flying Eyeball” poster for a series of concerts by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Albert King and John Mayall in San Francisco.

    Singer and bassist Tony Jackson of The Searchers died in Nottingham, England, at the age of 65 from a combination of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver.     American filmmaker Adam Muskiewicz launched the website elviswanted.com as part of a documentary investigating the myth that Elvis Presley is still alive, offering a $3 million reward to anyone who could find Elvis alive.     Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees underwent surgery on his digestive tract for the same health problem that had claimed the life of his twin brother Maurice seven years earlier. He also worked with Bob Dylan, George Clinton and Feargal Sharkey.
